Bringing into action the ‘Human Rights Day’
Every year, on December 10, the world celebrates ‘Human Rights Day’ with zeal and pride. The United Nations General Assembly acquired and proclaimed the much honored UDHR, Universal Declaration of Human Rights on this date in the year 1948. Hence, the date is chosen for this day.
UDHR is the first internationally binding pronouncement of human rights. It is also regarded as the one of the first and the foremost fruition of the United Nations. On an official note, Human Rights Day came into effect on December 04, 1950 during the General Assembly’s 317th Plenary Meeting. The UNGA announced the resolution 423(V). The resolution welcomed every member state of UN and all the interested organizations to celebrate the day in their own authority.
A better chance for our lifetime
If we talk about the goals of Human Rights Day, it is a chance for all of us to give us all a chance to stand at an equal level and give humanity a meaning. ‘Human rights’ is not a civil or political concept. It is basic to the mannerism of the whole mankind.
To understand better, let us have a look on what Louise Arbour, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said.
Today, poverty prevails as the gravest human rights challenge in the world. Combating poverty, deprivation and exclusion is not a matter of charity, and it does not depend on how rich a country is. By tackling poverty as a matter of human rights obligation, the world will have a better chance of abolishing this scourge in our lifetime… Poverty eradication is an achievable goal.
The celebration of Being Human
The celebration of Human Rights Day is about declaring the rights and duties of being a human at all levels. Most of the institutions organize events, lectures or seminars etc to give a meaning to the day.
The nations organize national and international conferences for the better enforcement of ‘Human Rights.’ It is also a tradition to give out the Nobel Peace Prize on this day. The five-yearly United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights are also awarded on the day.
