What is “International Day of Persons with Disabilities?”

Every year, on 3rd December, the world observes the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The day was started by United Nations Organization( UNO) in the year 1992. Many countries around the world observe the day as an awareness program for the betterment of their disabled population. However, there are countries that are yet to observe the day with significance it deserves.

The day is celebrated with the objective to let the world grasp the problems arising out of one’s disability. The day is about a message that every disabled person deserves the right to dignity, integrity and equal rights.

Themes for “International Day of Persons with Disabilities”

The day is celebrated with a particular theme each year. Let us have a look at the following themes given to the day by United Nations in last five years.

  • 2015: “Inclusion matters: access and empowerment for people of all abilities”(UNESCO)
  • 2016: “Achieving 17 Goals for the future we want”
  • 2017: “Transformation toward sustainable and resilient society for all”
  • 2018: “Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality”
  • 2019: “Promoting the participation of persons with disabilities and their leadership: taking action on the 2030 Development Agenda”

For the year 2020, UN has given the theme: ‘Building Back Better: toward a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 World’(Source: World Bank)

Why do we observe “International Day of Persons with Disabilities?”

There are following objectives to serve which we observe the day each year:

  1. To eliminate the discrimination against the ‘disabled’ persons by their family members, friends et cetera.
  2. To give them equal chances to project them in various fields of employment, sports, arts etc
  3. To invest in a future world that serves equality and justice for all.  
  4. To increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.
