The state of Palestine was divided into two parts. The Arabs and the Jews formed the two segments of the division. A resolution was passed, viz. resolution 181 to bring the division to action in the year 1947. To commemorate the anniversary of this event, the international day of solidarity with the Palestinian people is observed.
The Division for Palestinian Rights of the United Nations Secretariat organizes special events every year with the collaboration of the ‘Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People.’
In the event of 2005 organized by the United Nations, it issued a map. The map was evident in the replacement of Israel Palestine. The Secretary-General of United Nations Kofi Annan and other senior UN officials attended the ceremony.
The day is celebrated as an important day by the Palestinian people.
International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian People is also of global importance. The day makes the world remember that the problem of the rights of Palestinian people is alive. The Palestinian people are deprived of their basic human rights as stated by the UN. The rights include the right to return to their homes and property, the right to national independence and sovereignty, and the right to self-determination without external interference.
UN has been working hard to resolve this issue through education, freedom of speech, and expression et cetera. It has been 34 years since 1986 that the UN is celebrating this day.
On the issue of Palestine and the celebration of this day, Audrey Azoulay, the Director-General of UNESCO said that “In the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the world made a promise to leave no one behind. In this spirit, the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is an opportunity to support the Palestinian people’s aspiration for peace based on respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It is a time to reaffirm that solidarity is a transformational force, which builds on the diversity of humanity to bind all societies together.”
