The 26th day of November is celebrated as National Law Day. The day is also known as ‘Constitution Day.’
On the day, in the year 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted the constitution of India. The day was officially announced as ‘National Law Day’ by the government of India through a gazette notification in the year 2015 on November 19th.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi chose the day to mark it officially as ‘Constitution Day’ in order to propagate the values and impressions of Bhimrao Ambedkar.

Observance of National Law Day
- National Law Day is not observed as a public holiday. However, it is perceived as a day that brings the opportunity to get to know about our constitution. Different departments under the government of India work in their capacity to get the people to know about the laws and constitution of India.
- MHRD or the Ministry of Human Resource and Development celebrate the day as it conducts essay and speech competitions in its schools. Such activities in schools and colleges spread awareness about the constitution in the coming generation.
- Back in 2015, the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs introduced a special session in the parliament to celebrate the remembrance of the day. Department of Sports also organized ‘Run for Equality’ to put its effort for the day.
- There may be a number of ways to celebrate the day but to propagate the ideas of our constitution serves the purpose at the apex.
Significance
- It is necessary to dedicate one day to our constitution. We are the citizens of a democratic country. Hence, to know the land of the law is not only our right but also the shared responsibility as an entire nation.
- When the steps are taken to celebrate a day as vital as ‘National Law day,’ people are convinced to know about its importance. A nation, whose citizens know its constitution, rights, and duties will not fall to deceit.
- It strengthens the spirit of the nation. It instills in people the meaning behind their constitution to understand what their country signifies.
