It has been a tragedy for the last fifty years. It’s time to find better ways to coexist. We present the FAMILY STRUCTURE IN INDIA in this blog.

The scene that many of us have in our family history seen somewhere: dozens of people celebrating Diwali or some other holiday around a lucky stretch of family tables— siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles, great-aunts. For the 37th time the grandparents tell the stories of the old family. “It was the most beautiful place in your life you’ve ever seen,” says one, remembering his first day in India. Here is an insight on FAMILY STRUCTURE IN INDIA.

“Everywhere were lights… It was a grand party!” Between meals, stacks of plates are found in the sink and children’s teams conspire in the basement mischievously. Young parents ‘ groups huddle in a corridor and prepare. The old men are waiting for dinner and sleep in couches. In its enmeshed, caring and draining beauty, it is the aura of an extended family. Joint Family – FAMILY STRUCTURE IN INDIA

The joint FAMILY STRUCTURE IN INDIA assumes a less and lesser role as the years pass. By the 1980s, the Diwali family was not extended. There is a young mother, a father, their son and daughter who eat sweets in front of a TV. This is the story of our time – once a vast network of many brothers and sisters and extended relatives, fragmenting into ever smaller and more delicate forms.

The initial result of that division, the nuclear family, seemed not so bad. But then the fragmentation began, because the nuclear family is so fragile. If you want to sum up the changes in FAMILY STRUCTURE IN INDIA over the past century, the truest thing to say is this: they have made life freer for individuals and more chaotic for families. We made a better life for adults but a worse life for youth. They also moved from large, integrated, and extended families that helped protect the most vulnerable people in society from life shocks to smaller.

Isolated nuclear families (married couples and their children), giving the most privileged people in society space to develop their talents and broaden their possibilities. Ironically, the change from larger and integrated families to smaller and isolated nuclear families led to a familial system that liberates the rich and ravages the working-class and the poor. Nuclear Family – FAMILY STRUCTURE IN INDIA

Nuclear Family

As we discuss the country’s problems we don’t think enough about families. It sounds overly judgmental. Too humiliating. Perhaps even religious too. But the blunt truth is that the nuclear family has been collapsing in slow motion for decades, and many of our other problems— with healthcare, mental health, addiction, the quality of the labor force— become crumbling out of that. It is not coming back for most men.

Indians are hungry to live in extended and forged families, in new and, at the same time, old ways. This is an essential opportunity, an opportunity to thicken and expand family relationships, an opportunity to encourage more adults and children to live and grow under the caring gaze of a dozen pairs of eyes, and to be captured by a dozen pairs of arms when they fall. We’ve eaten at smaller and smaller tables for decades, with fewer and fewer relatives.
