What is Pongal? Why is it celebrated?
Pongal is known to be the beginning of harvest season in the New Year. It is a multiple day celebration to welcome the harvest season. Pongal is celebrated in South India, typically in Tamil Nadu. It is a four-day festival starting from 14th of January. According to Tamil Solar calendar, Pongal is observed at the start of the month of Tai. As per Tai, it is the month when the sun reaches the extremes of the Southern Hemisphere and gradually starts returning to the Northern Hemisphere. And so, is dedicated to Surya; the Sun God.
“Pongal” literally means “To boil”. And so, the Pongal Dish is the traditional dish of newly harvested rice which is boiled with milk and sugar. It is one of the most important festivals of South India. People make dishes and sweets as a token to offer to Lord Surya. They keep a get together and exchange gifts and sweets with family & friends to celebrate the same. People in South India offer prayers and traditionally make decorated Kolam artworks using rice-powder as a ritual.
The harvest season is celebrated in many parts of the country with different names and holidays are observed in many parts of India for the same.
