STORY | HINDI MEDIUM

Hindi Medium
Hindi Medium

For those who haven’t seen the movie— you are missing out on a gem!

Hindi Medium is a story of the transition of Delhiwallas to Delhite. Is it Confusing much? To put it simply, it is about a couple who wants their child to get admitted into an English medium school. Raj Batra is a wealthy Delhi6 boutique owner living happily with his wife (Meeta) and daughter (Piaa). Meeta, or as Raj calls his childhood sweetheart— Mitthu, is concerned about her child’s education

She wants Piaa to get a good education in an English medium school. The reason being, an English medium will let Piaa flourish in the elite society. With that hope, the Batra family moves from their family home to the posh locality of Vasant Vihar. Now, this is where the fun starts. The family is Desi, while they aim to be “The Delhite.”(our version for the elite status they want to attend). It turns out they are the misfits who are finding it difficult to adjust to the new life. The nickname, Mitthu slowly turns into the modern version— “Honey.” Yet, they cannot find a good school for their child.

Then a new scheme comes around. Raj and Meeta find out about the RTE quota: a scam that rich people do to get their kids admitted to prestigious schools. And you might have guessed what they did, have you? Yes, they took the chance and started to pretend that they belong to a deprived class. They shift into a slum located in Bharat Nagar, where they befriend Shyam Prakash and Tulsi Prakash.

Tulsi and Shyam are hopeful that their son, Mohan Prakash, receives a good education. Both the families apply at Delhi Grammar School under the RTE quota. While Piaa gets admission, Mohan’s application gets rejected. Mohan starts studying at Bharat Nagar Government School. To compensate, the Batra family donates money anonymously to provide better facilities for Mohan.

Shyam wants to thank the donor and starts searching for them. However, he ends up uncovering the lies of the Batra family and reports them to the principal. The entire story becomes an eye-opener for our education system and how we value materialistic things.

We have seen how the story unfolds in this one. Shifting our attention to acting, we see six prominent actors in the cast: Raj(late Irrfan Khan), Meetu(Saba Qamar), Piaa(Dishita Sehgal), Shyam(Deepak Dobriyal), Tulsi(Swati Daas), and Mohan(Angshuman Nandi).

HINDI MEDIUM CAST

The movie revolves around this main Hindi Medium cast. However, we also see known names: Amrita Singh (Principal Lodha Singhania) and Mallika Dua (Dolly). We also see Neha Dhupia (Kabir’s wife: Aarti Suri) and Sanjay Suri (Kabir Suri) as part of the special guest appearance in the Hindi Medium cast members. Keeping all of the primary and guest appearances, we talk of the marvelous Hindi Medium Cast:

Raj: Irrfan Khan(07 January 1967 – 29 April 2020)

Late Mr. Irrfan, one of the most promising actors, plays as the master batsman of the Hindi Medium. He made a strong mark on Bollywood with his excellent roles in Piku( 2015), Lunchbox (2013), Paan Singh Tomar (2011), Talvar (2015), and many more.

Irfan Khan - Hindi Medium Cast

Bollywood was never his limit; he also made a mark on Hollywood and British film through his projects:  Slumdog Millionaire (2008), The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), Life of Pi (2012), Jurassic World (2015), and Inferno (2016).

The acting and comic timing of Irrfan is just incredible as ever. No one can argue the distinct persona he brings to every character he plays. This Hindi Medium cast member plays the role of Raj, who sells copies of big brands in Chandini Chowk.

He is convincing as a Desi Dilliwala who is willing to do everything for his family. He hires a consultant to learn English for the sake of his daughter. He brings out a new flavor of comedy with Raj and himself. Oh, by the way, his phenomenal acting won him the award for Best Actor!

Meetu(aka Mitthu): Saba Qamar | HINDI MEDIUM CAST

If Irrfan is the master batsman, she is the coach. Why? Because she is the worrisome madame that makes Raj shift from his family home. She worries her daughter won’t face the world headstrong if she misses out on elite schools as studying in English medium school defines class.

Saba Qamar - Hindi Medium Cast
Saba Qamar – Hindi Medium Cast

In fact, school is the reason why she makes Raj shift houses. It even becomes the reason for the shifting as one school wants the parents to live within a 3-kilometer radius. Saba Qamar, the Hindi Medium cast member, takes on the role of Meetu, the tension-taking mom as a part of the. She compliments Raj’s character with her funny acting as his wife.

Her nomination for Best Actress is a testament to Saba Khan’s performance as a promising Hindi Medium cast.

Piaa Batra: Dishita Sehgal

Dishita plays the sweet happy-go-lucky child. She is compliant and loves to play! She is just like every other kid who find happiness in play. Yet, she the one for whom everyone and everything is in chaos!

What can a child do in such a case? She is the innocent one who becomes the center of the scheme. This Hindi Medium cast member is adorable as Piaa and definitely a charm for the movie!

Shyam Prakash: Deepak Dobriyal

You must know this hilarious artist from Tanu Weds Manu (2011), Dabangg 2 (2012), Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015). He plays the role of Shyam, an emotional man among the Hindi Medium cast members; he is Deepak Dobriyal! Shyam Prakash (Deepak) is a poor man that lives in the slums of Bharat Nagar.

He might be poor, but he always believes in humanity. He has high hopes for his son, Mohan, and wishes he gets into a prestigious school in Delhi. This Hindi Medium cast member even got nominated for the award of the best supporting actor!

Tulsi: Swati Das | HINDI MEDIUM CAST

Swati Das plays the role of Tulsi Prakash. She is the wife of Shyam. You might see her as a simple housewife, but she can fight for herself and her family whenever needed! Viewers can expect a fabulous performance from this Hindi Medium cast member.

Mohan: Angshuman Nandi | HINDI MEDIUM CAST

Mohan is the kin of Shyam and Tulsi. You better not take this young Hindi Medium cast lightly. He is a young 9 years old drummer and child actor from Tripura. He performed on India’s Got Talent at the age of 3. Note that Hindi Medium is his debut Hindi film, that too with Irrfan Khan!

Principal Lodha Singhania: Amrita Singh

You know Amrita Singh very well(if you’re a 90s child). She plays the character of Principal Lodha. Contrary to the guiding nature of a Principal, she is corrupt. She accepts only the rich people and is behind the misdeeds, which Raj tries to expose.

Dolly: Mallika Dua | HINDI MEDIUM CAST

You know her as the prominent comedy-centric Instagram star/influencer.  Here, she joins as the Hindi Medium cast members as Dolly. She is a customer of Raj’s boutique.

Though for a short scene, Mallika Dua keeps her Instagram famous accent in it. You will see her buying the same bridal lehenga she rejected first after being charmed by Raj’s clever selling tactic.

Aarti Suri: Neha Dhupia  and Kabir Suri: Sanjay Suri

Both Neha Dhupia(Arti Suri) and Sanjay Suri(Kabir Suri) make guest appearances. Although they are not the prominent Hindi Medium cast member, they play the role of husband and wife.

OUR VERDICT

This movie is not your commercial, just-for-laugh baseless movie. We will keep on emphasizing that Hindi Medium tackles deep-rooted problems hilariously. It is a perfect mixture of humor and emotions, where each actor shines in their department. Kudos to Irrfan for sharp comic timing.

Apart from acting, you are in for a great time in terms of storytelling too. The plot is authentic, and the incidents are relatable. You even love the music compositions from Sachin–Jigar, which adds to more fun in the movie.

You can also follow up with the sequel of the film: Angrezi Medium, which you can stream on Disney+ Hotstar and enjoy the show!
