What is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women?
25th November marks the beginning of a 16-day activism campaign which ends on 10th December. 10th December is observed as the International Human Rights Day. International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is observed annually on 25th November all over the world. This activism campaign is dedicated to spreading awareness and aiming for a violence-free future.
This campaign aims to bridge the funding gaps. On the other hand, this campaign also focuses on eliminating the violence against women & girls.
Origin
The day officially roots back in 1981, when the efforts of a group of women activists this day to be marked for eliminating the violence against women and girls. However, the day has its historical origin back in 1960 because of the brutal assassination of the three Mirabal sisters. The three Mirabal sisters were brutally assassinated on 25th November 1960 in the Dominican Republic. The sister-trio who were political activists were assassinated on the orders of Dominican ruler Rafael Trujillo (1930-1961). And their only crime was being women and activists.
On 20th December 1993, Resolution 48/104 was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly for Elimination of Violence Against Women. And therefore, the United Nations General Assembly designated 25th November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women finally in 1999. So, from that day onwards, different countries witness the observance of this day every year and the respective Governments aims to spread awareness with a call for action to eliminate the violence.
International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women 2020
Due to the outbreak of Pandemic Covid-19 and the lockdown that followed, the reports of violence against women especially domestic violence has witnessed an alarming increase. The report shows over 200 million women and girls have witnessed violence and abuse by their partners. Unfortunately, less than 40% of women were able to report the abuse or seek help.
The UN Secretary-General’s UNiTE by 2030 to End Violence against Women campaign aims to eliminate this violence to protect women & girls and their dignity. The 16-day activism campaign by UN Secretary-General’s UNiTE by 2030 to End Violence against Women campaign has marked “Orange the World: Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect!” as this year’s theme. The UN Women’s Generation Equality campaign has called for survivors, activists, decision-makers, and people across the world to work together to raise awareness, funds, services and prevention.
